Law Society Honours Edmonton Recipients for 50 Years of Service

An excerpt of a speech made by Douglas R. Mah, QC, President of the Law Society of Alberta at a Long Service Awards luncheon held in Edmonton on November 24, 2011.

It is my great pleasure to welcome each of you here today as we celebrate the distinguished careers of six Alberta lawyers.

The six lawyers we are honouring today are: Honourable Judge D.R. Wong; David J.R. Ross, QC; Jack N. Agrios, OC, QC; R.G. Cummings, QC: Rostyk Sadownik; and Robert E. Schnell, QC.

On November 24, 2011, Long Service Awards were presented by Law Society President Doug Mah, QC, to Edmonton recipients (left to right) Rostyk Sadownik, The Honourable Judge Wong, Jack Agrios, OC, QC, and Robert Schnell, QC. Mr. David Ross, QC and R.G. Cummings, QC were also honoured for their years of service but were unable to attend.

Honourable Judge D.R. Wong

Judge Darlene Wong was born in Edmonton, Alberta. She attended the University of Alberta and earned her arts degree in 1959 and her law degree in 1960. She articled under Roger Belzil in Edmonton and was called to the Bar on June 15, 1961, before the Honourable Mr. Justice S. Bruce Smith, Chief Justice of the then Supreme Court of Alberta. Judge Wong practised in Fort Saskatchewan before being appointed to the judiciary on October 31, 1979. She currently sits as a Judge of the Provincial Court of Alberta and is the first female to reach 50 years of service with the Law Society of Alberta.

David J.R. Ross, QC

David J.R. Ross, QC was born in Edmonton, Alberta. He studied at the University of Alberta and received his arts degree in 1959 and his law degree a year later. Mr. Ross articled under W. Stanley Ross. He was called to the Bar on June 6, 1961 before the Honourable Mr. Justice Horace G. Johnson. Mr. Ross continues to practice at McLennan Ross LLP in Edmonton where he started his career 50 years ago. He was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1981.

Jack N. Agrios, OC, QC

Jack Agrios, OC, QC was born in Edmonton, Alberta. In 1959, he received his arts degree which was followed by a law degree a year later from the University of Alberta. Mr. Agrios articled under W.G. Morrow, QC. On June 16, 1961 Mr. Agrios was called to the Bar before the Honourable Mr. Justice E.W.S. Kane. Mr. Agrios served as a Bencher of the Law Society from 1978 to 1982 and was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1978. He received a Distinguished Service Award for Service to the Profession in 2002. Also in 2002, Mr. Agrios was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada. He currently practises at Kennedy Agrios LLP in Edmonton.

R.G. Cummings, QC

Ronald Gordon Cummings was born in Edmonton, Alberta and attended law school at the University of Alberta. He graduated with a Bachelor of Laws in 1960. Mr. Cummings articled under Kenneth A. McKenzie, QC and was called to the Bar before the Honourable Mr. Justice E.W.S. Kane on May 26, 1961. Mr. Cummings has practised at his current firm of Cummings Andrews Mackay LLP since 1961 and has focused on the area of civil litigation and personal injury law. He was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1987.

Rostyk Sadownik

Rostyk Sadownik was born in Edmonton, Alberta. Mr. Sadownik attended the University of Alberta where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1959 and a Bachelor of Law in 1960. He articled under Peter Alexander Miskew, QC. He was called to the Bar on June 7, 1961 before the Honourable Mr. Justice Horace G. Johnson. Mr. Sadownik has practised at Wheatley Sadownik since 1961 and has recently worked primarily in the area of Civil Litigation.

Robert E. Schnell, QC

Robert E. Schnell, QC was born in Killam, Alberta. He attended the University of Alberta where he earned his arts degree in 1959 and his law degree in 1960. Mr. Schnell articled under H.F. Macdonald and was called to the Bar in Red Deer on N ovember 2, 1961 before the Honourable Mr. Justice W.J.C. Kirby. Mr. Schnell was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1981 and he received a Distinguished Service Award for Service to the Community in 2000. He currently practises at Schnell Hardy Jones LLP in Red Deer.
