Law Students Awarded for Academic Excellence

The Law Society is pleased to award the following scholarships, prizes and bursaries to University of Calgary and University of Alberta law students.

Viscount Bennett Scholarship

The Viscount Bennett Scholarship was established through a trust fund by the Right Honourable Viscount Bennett to encourage a high standard of legal education, training and excellence. Applicants including law graduates, articling students or lawyers with the Law Society of Alberta may be awarded towards post graduate studies from the Law Society of Alberta. The 2012 recipients are:

  • Clayton Bangsund (who will study at Columbia University), and
  • Paul Chiswell (who will study at Oxford University)

W. Bernie Kelly, QC, Memorial Prize

The late William Bernie Kelly, QC served the Law Society of Alberta as Deputy Secretary (1966 - 1969), Secretary Treasurer (1969 - 1987) and Secretary (1987-1988). During this time he was a pioneer in the establishment of the Federation of Law Societies in Canada. The creation of this award was intended to recognize his contributions to the Law Society of Alberta and his interest in encouraging a high level of legal education and practice in Alberta. This prize is awarded annually to students completing third year who are of good academic standing and who have performed with distinction in a skills training, or professional responsibility course and ethics course or program in a faculty of law. The 2012 prize recipients are:

  • Amanda Winters (U of C)
  • Ciara Toole (U of A)
  • Kimberly Howe (U of C)
  • Marina Schellenberg (U of C)

Peter Freeman, QC Bursary for Aboriginal Students in Law

To honour Peter Freeman, QC, and his contributions to the legal profession in Alberta and his lifelong dedication to legal education, the Law Society of Alberta established in 2001 this bursary for Indigenous students-in-law. The bursary is an endowment which funds an annual award to an indigenous student, based on academic standing and financial need, at each of the Alberta law faculties. Peter Freeman, QC, served as the Law Society’s Executive Director from 1989 until his retirement in 2001. The 2012 bursary has been awarded to:

  • Karley Scott Rosowsky (U of C)
