Welcome New Bencher Derek Van Tassell
The Law Society of Alberta is pleased to welcome Grande Prairie lawyer Derek Van Tassell to the Benchers upon the resignation of Don Scott who was recently elected Member of the Legislative Assembly in the recent provincial election.
Mr. Van Tassell represents the Northern district at the Bencher table.
Mr. Van Tassell graduated from the University of Alberta in 1996 with a BA, and a law degree from the University of New Brunswick in 1999. After his articles, which were completed in Grande Prairie, he commenced his practice which primarily consists of family law, civil litigation, and real estate. He is a partner with Stefura Greber and Beal LLP in Grande Prairie.
Over the years, Mr. Van Tassell has sat on several Law Society committees including the Pro Bono Committee, Professional Responsibility Committee, and the Continuing Competence Committee.
Mr. Van Tassell currently volunteers at the Grande Prairie Legal Guidance Clinic and was instrumental in setting up the clinic in Grande Prairie. He is a board member on the Grande Prairie Legal Aid Regional Committee (10+ years).
Some of his past volunteer activities include being a board member for: the Grande Prairie Youth Emergency Shelter; Grande Prairie Art Gallery; Grande Prairie Soccer Association. He was also the president of the Grande Prairie bar association for many years.
Outside of work Derek enjoys playing soccer, squash, basketball, traveling and spending time with his wife and three children.
