Queen's Counsel Applications for 2013

A reminder that applications for Queen’s Counsel appointment are now being accepted using the new online application form. The application deadline is Friday September 6, 2013.

Further information regarding the QC application process may be found at the Justice and Solicitor General website and inquiries may be directed to the Office of the Deputy Minister of Justice at 780-427-5032 (Toll Free: Dial 310-0000).


Commercial Appearance Court

On a trial basis commencing Tuesday, July 2, 2013, a commercial duty Justice will be available in open chambers in Calgary at 10:00 a.m. every Monday (or Tuesday if Monday is a non-sitting day) and in Edmonton at 2:00 p.m. every Tuesday to deal with urgent, scheduling and consent matters and applications for extensions of time to file materials for pending motions (each of which must take no more than 10 minutes) and opposed applications for adjournments of matters scheduled to be heard during the week.

No pre-bookings for these appearances are necessary. Unless it is not reasonably possible, counsel are responsible for providing copies of all necessary filed and to-be-filed documents directly to the presiding duty justice by noon of the previous Friday.

This is a pilot program and will be reviewed in approximately six months.

Robert David Nelson Memorial Fund

Alberta lawyer, Rob Nelson, lost his life while assisting others during the recent floods in the Calgary area on June 21, 2013. To assist in meeting the needs of his family, the Robert David Nelson Memorial Fund has been established.

J. Patrick Stopa Access to Justice Scholarship Application

The J. Patrick Stopa Access to Justice Scholarship has been created by the partners of his Calgary law firm, Caron and Partners LLP, in honour of Pat’s contributions to Legal Aid Alberta. The scholarship will provide $2000 for educational funding to a student or junior lawyer (up to five years at the bar) who demonstrates a commitment to ensuring access to justice in Alberta.
