Nominate a Lawyer Today for a 2014 Distinguished Service Award

Do you know a lawyer whose profession is their passion?

Consider nominating a lawyer for a 2014 Distinguished Service Award in any of four categories:

  • Service to the Community
  • Service to the Profession
  • Legal Scholarship
  • Pro Bono Legal Service

The Distinguished Service Awards celebrate excellence in the legal profession. Jointly awarded by the Law Society of Alberta and the Canadian Bar Association – Alberta, these prestigious awards recognize the many outstanding contributions Alberta lawyers make to the community, to the profession, to legal scholarship and in pro bono legal service.

The nomination deadline is November 15, 2013. Nominations may be mailed, emailed or completed online. Further details are available on the Law Society’s website. To make a nomination, please include the following information:

  • A statement detailing why the candidate is worthy of the award;
  • A curriculum vitae outlining the nominee’s background, career and any current activities; and
  • A maximum of two letters of support for the nomination.

Submissions that are mailed or emailed will also require the completed form available in the nomination brochure.

The 2014 Distinguished Service Awards will be presented at the Alberta Law Conference on Friday, January 31, 2014 at The Westin in Calgary, Alberta.

Special Notice - Securities and Safety Deposit Box Contents

NOTE: This special notice is intended to explain legislation and provide specific information. Every effort has been made to ensure the contents are accurate. However, if a discrepancy should occur in interpretation between this special notice and governing legislation, the legislation takes precedence.

The Unclaimed Personal Property and Vested Property Act (the Act) and the General Regulation (the Regulation) became effective on September 1, 2008. The Act and Regulation establish a service to Albertans who have lost track of property as a result of business or personal circumstances. A central registry administered by Alberta Treasury Board and Finance, Tax and Revenue Administration (TRA):

  • provides a searchable directory for unclaimed property;
  • facilitates the processing of claims to reunite owners with their property; and
  • establishes clear and centralized administration for the management of property that comes under the control of the Crown.

TRA is currently reviewing the application of the Act and Regulation to securities and safety deposit box contents. Due to this review, TRA will delay the Act and Regulation taking effect on these types of properties for a period of one year. TRA will not require reporting for unclaimed securities and the contents of safety deposit boxes for the 2013 reporting year nor will we accept delivery of these items for the 2013 reporting year. We expect to communicate the results of our review by the middle of 2014.
