Notice of Disbarment - Bonnie Ewing
On June 3, 2013, a Resignation Committee of the Benchers of the Law Society of Alberta granted the application of Bonnie Ewing to resign, pursuant to section 61 of the Legal Profession Act, R.S.A. 2000, c. L-8, and Rule 92 of the Rules of the Law Society of Alberta, effective immediately. Ms. Ewing is therefore disbarred.
Ms. Ewing was a suspended member of the Law Society of Alberta. She resides in Calgary, Alberta, and practised in Calgary and other locations in southern, Alberta from March 26, 2004 to January 15, 2010.
Ms. Ewing faced a discipline hearing on ten citations at the time of her resignation application. The citations alleged that Ms. Ewing failed to treat the court with courtesy, failed to render timely and competent services to her clients, failed to keep her clients informed as to the progress of their files, failed to be punctual in fulfilling commitments to her clients, failed to respond on a timely basis to her clients, failed to fulfill a financial commitment incurred in the business aspects of her practice without reasonable justification, failed to pay the amount awarded in a judgment issued by the Court and thereby showed a lack of respect for the law in her personal conduct, failed to notify the Law Society of the issuance of a writ of enforcement against her and failed to respond to the Law Society in a complete and timely manner.
Ms. Ewing has admitted facts to support the citations. The Statement of Facts containing the foregoing admissions has been attached to Ms. Ewing’s roll. A copy of it may be obtained from the Law Society upon request.
Ms. Ewing previously transferred all of her open files to a custodian which custodian was discharged on September 27, 2011 and all files were reassigned by Legal Aid.
The Resignation Committee directed that Ms. Ewing pay the costs of the discipline proceedings and the resignation application, set at $3,000.00, prior to any application for re-admission.
