The Distinguished Service Awards celebrate excellence in the legal profession and recognize the many outstanding contributions Alberta lawyers make to the community, to the profession, to legal scholarship and in pro bono legal service. These prestigious awards are presented annually by the Law Society of Alberta and the Canadian Bar Association – Alberta.

Nomination forms and further details are available on the Law Society’s website at  To make a nomination, please include the following information:

  • A statement detailing why the candidate is worthy of the award,
  • A curriculum vitae outlining the nominee’s background, career and any current activities, and
  • A maximum of two letters of support for the nomination.

The 2013 Distinguished Service Awards will be presented at the Alberta Law Conference on Friday, February 1, 2013 at the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald in Edmonton, Alberta.

Unmarried & Unjust [Enrichment] SuperConference

The Faculties of Law at both the University of Calgary and the University of Alberta are co-sponsoring a family law conference entitled: Unmarried & Unjust [Enrichment] SuperConference. Dividing property at the end of a common law relationship is extremely complicated. The recent SCC case of Kerr v. Baranow has completely changed the property division landscape.

Attendees will learn the finer points of the Kerr decision, review nation-wide cases since Kerr, see what the Alberta Courts are doing and learn how to conduct a common law property division case.

The Faculty includes Professor Ben Hovius from the University of Western Ontario, Professor Rollie Thompson from Dalhousie, Philip Epstein, QC, from Toronto, Jennifer Cooper, QC, from Winnipeg, and Doug Moe, QC, from Calgary.

The SuperConference will be held on Thursday, November 29, 2012 in Edmonton and on Friday, November 30, 2012 in Calgary. Details can be found at
