Moose Hide Campaign Day 2021
Thursday, Feb. 11 marks the 10th annual Moose Hide Campaign. The Moose Hide Campaign is a grassroots movement of Indigenous and non-Indigenous men and boys who are standing up against violence towards women and children.
Over the years, it has grown into a national campaign to engage all Canadians, with thousands of participating communities, organizations, businesses and schools across the country. People of all ages, genders and cultural backgrounds are invited to participate in the Moose Hide Campaign. Since the Campaign began in 2011, thousands of Moose Hide Campaign events, ceremonies and gatherings have taken place and over two million squares of moose hide have been distributed.
According to the Canadian Women’s Foundation, half of all Canadian women have experienced at least one incident of physical or sexual violence since the age of 16. Indigenous women are three times more likely to experience domestic violence than non-Indigenous women and murdered at six times the rate of non-Indigenous women.
This year’s Moose Hide Campaign is particularly significant. A national survey of agencies who help survivors of gender-based violence, conducted by the Ending Violence Association of Canada, found that the severity and prevalence of violence has increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. With widespread lockdowns, many women and children do not feel safe in their homes and struggle to access victim services.
