Apply to Serve on a 2025 Law Society of Alberta Committee

The Law Society is now accepting applications from active, practising Alberta lawyers in good standing who are interested in volunteering on a committee. Diverse perspectives play an important role in helping us achieve our mission of serving the public interest by ensuring a high standard of legal services and professional conduct.

Committee appointments will be approved at the February 2025 Bencher meeting. Committee members are appointed for a three-year term.

The deadline for applications is noon MT on Thursday, Oct. 17, 2024. Please note, it is the sole responsibility of the applicants to ensure their applications are complete in accordance with the requirements below. Incomplete, late or applications with CVs that do not meet the specified requirements set out below will not be reviewed.

How to Apply

If you are interested in volunteering on any of the committees listed below, you are encouraged to review the committee descriptions. You should also review and update your information in the Lawyer Portal as required.

The form takes approximately 10 minutes to complete and does not have to be finished in one sitting. Once you submit your application, you will not be able to make further updates to your responses.

You must include a CV in your application that adheres to the following size and formatting requirements. CVs that do not meet these requirements will not be reviewed.

  • Maximum two pages
  • Use size 12 font
  • 1.1 line spacing (minimum)
  • PDF or DOCX format
  • Maximum 1 MB

There are 13 anticipated committee vacancies:

  • Audit and Finance (two vacancies): The Audit and Finance Committee has approximately seven, two-hour meetings per year.
  • Conduct (five vacancies): The Conduct Committee meets in panels consisting of three participants once a month, typically on a Tuesday. The panel composition is based on availability of Committee members. All meetings are scheduled for two-hours; however, they may conclude sooner than the allocated time. Although seldom, there are also occasions where availability may be requested for Special Conduct Committee panels that occur outside of the regular schedule.
  • Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (two vacancies): The Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee has four, two-hour meetings per year.
  • Lawyer Competence (two vacancies): The Lawyer Competence Committee has four, two-hour meetings per year.
  • Practice Review (two vacancies): The Practice Review Committee meets in panels of three on Wednesday mornings. There are approximately eight panel meetings each year, which typically last an hour and a half. The panel meetings are scheduled by the Tribunal Office and the panel composition is based on availability.
Current Volunteers

Lawyers currently serving on a committee who have served more than eight years will not be appointed regardless of their quality of service as an effort to offer opportunities to new volunteers. Those current volunteers who have not reached this threshold and are interested in continuing, do not apply. A separate email will be sent to you with a current volunteer application link to register your interest.
