- Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Counsel
Susannah Alleyne serves as the Law Society’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Counsel.
As EDI Counsel, Susannah supports the Law Society in advancing its strategic objective to continue the Law Society’s commitment to accessibility, equity, diversity and inclusion in its processes, programs and services. Susannah’s role is central to the Law Society’s strategic work; the tools she has developed and her interactions with lawyers and staff throughout Alberta are integral to the development of safer and more inclusive environments for lawyers and their clients.
Her ongoing work includes working closely with the Law Society’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee, members of the Education team and others at the Law Society, as well as collaborating with key justice system stakeholders to advance work on EDI affecting the Alberta legal community and the public. Susannah also develops recommendations to address barriers to EDI in the legal profession considering both the proactive and reactive role of the Law Society and generally advises the Law Society on issues relating to EDI in Alberta.
After graduating from Osgoode Hall Law School, Susannah moved to Calgary in 2013 and began her legal career in family law. Off the side of her desk, Susannah led EDI initiatives and volunteered within several organizations, including the Canadian Bar Association – Alberta Branch, Association of Women Lawyers, University of Calgary’s Black Law Students Association, and Calgary Legal Guidance. These experiences strengthened Susannah’s passion for creating equitable, diverse and inclusive workspaces, which inspired her to pursue the position she currently holds at the Law Society of Alberta.
