Legal Fees I Paid to My Lawyer
The Law Society cannot assist with legal fee issues.
The Law Society has no authority to order a lawyer to reimburse a client or to reduce the amount they have charged for their services. Issues about whether a fee agreement or lawyer’s charges were reasonable should be directed to the Review Office at the Court of King’s Bench. Review & Assessment booking requests can be submitted by filling out the online form.
There is a fee for filing a Notice of Review and there is a limitation period after which you may not be able to initiate a Review. If the limitation period has passed, you may bring a Court application for an extension, which may or may not be granted. Please note that further delay will decrease the likelihood of any extension of time being granted. Find out more on their website.
Compensation for Losses Caused By My Lawyer
The Law Society does not provide compensation.
The Law Society has no authority to compensate a client for financial losses they may have suffered due to the services provided by their lawyer.
If you have suffered a financial loss from working with your lawyer or because of the lawyer’s services, you may be entitled to make a claim with Alberta Lawyers Indemnity Association (ALIA). ALIA reviews claims made for professional liability and/or misappropriation by lawyers. Find out more information here.
