The Lawyer Directory allows people to search for information on a specific lawyer or find a lawyer who can help you with your legal issue based on certain search criteria.
Members of the public can find a lawyer to assist with their legal needs by searching by name, firm, location, practice areas, language(s) spoken, gender, and whether a lawyer offers limited scope retainers. There are approximately 7,500 lawyers in private practice who are eligible to provide legal assistance.
Please note that the Law Society of Alberta does not recommend or endorse individual lawyers. It is still up to the public to research and choose a lawyer based on their individual needs.

Finding a Specific Lawyer
To find the business contact information, practising status, discipline history and admission date for a specific practising lawyer or students-at-law registered with the Law Society of Alberta, enter their last name and/or first name into the fields below and click SEARCH.
Review the results to learn more about the specific lawyer.
Finding Lawyers Based on Your Legal Issue
To find a lawyer or list of lawyers who may be able to assist you with your legal issue, use the filters available in Advanced Search Options, including Practising Status, City/Town, Firm/Company Name, Gender, Languages Spoken and Practice Areas.
After selecting the appropriate filters, click SEARCH and the Lawyer Directory will generate a list of relevant lawyers. Review the results to learn more about the specific lawyer(s). For more information on using the Advanced Search in the Lawyer Directory, view our Lawyer Directory How-To Guide.
When using the Lawyer Directory to find a lawyer for your legal issue, please note the following:
- Not all lawyers have their contact information published in the Lawyer Directory. Those lawyers may not be taking on new clients, have roles inside companies or government, are non-practising, suspended, disbarred, or do not have a business address.

Lawyers’ profiles in the Lawyer Directory show their name, business address, phone number, if they are currently active (currently practising law) and the year they became a lawyer in Alberta (enrolment date).
They also display if a lawyer has any current citations, discipline history, notices or hearing reports against them. It is important to be informed about a lawyer’s previous conduct before contacting them regarding your legal issue. Please note that a lawyer’s profile will display any discipline history dating back to Jan. 1, 2015. To find discipline history before this date, visit the Regulation section of our website or contact the Law Society.
Beyond using the Lawyer Directory, another way for Albertans to find a lawyer is by using their own personal network. Often relatives, friends or colleagues have used a lawyer at one time or another and it may be helpful to ask about their experiences.
Many lawyers and firms also have websites that list information about their areas of practice, locations of practice and fees associated with their services so you can learn more.

While the Customer Service team can help you navigate the Lawyer Directory as needed, the tool is meant to be used in a self-serve format. The Lawyer Directory can be accessed from any desktop computer and the site will be made mobile-friendly in the coming months. For those without access to a personal device, public libraries often provide public computers with free internet access. Visit your local library for more information.
