Becoming a new lawyer in Alberta, while exciting, can come with uncertainty and questions about your professional obligations, what resources are available and who to contact for questions.
The information on this page has been organized in one place to help you easily access what you need when you need it. All resources listed are available at no additional cost for Alberta lawyers.
The Law Society has several requirements for active Alberta lawyers throughout the year. The following information is available to help you learn about and meet these requirements.
- Billing Cycles, Filing Deadlines and Other Key Dates – A complete list of all Law Society requirements and their deadlines. New lawyers should pay close attention to the Annual Fees, Membership Information Update Form, Annual Indemnity Assessment, Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Plan and Indigenous Cultural Competency Education requirements.
- Annual CPD Plan – Information about the CPD Program, including the Professional Development Profile, CPD Plan Requirements and Tool, FAQs and other additional resources.
- Contact Information Change – Lawyers must promptly notify the Law Society, through the Lawyer Portal, of any changes to their business and personal contact information.
Lawyers can access the online Billing and Filing Deadlines Calendar, which lists all Law Society and Alberta Lawyers Indemnity Association major filing deadlines. This calendar is downloadable to fully integrate with your calendar.
The Law Society provides the following services and programs to help you realize your potential and navigate being a new lawyer in Alberta.
- Practice Advisor Support – Confidential service to help you with legal, ethical and practice inquiries and resolve inter-lawyer disputes.
- Equity Ombudsperson – Confidential assistance with the resolution of harassment and discrimination concerns in the workplace.
- Mentorship Programs – Various programs that provide unique opportunities to network and discuss important topics that affect lawyers.
- AdvisorLink – Service that links you to more experienced counsel to answer one-off inquiries in a wide range of practice areas.
- SoloNet – Trusted online network for sole and small firm practitioners to share professional knowledge, ideas and experience.
- Practice Management Consultations – One-on-one consultations with our Practice Management team to identify potential areas of risk before problems develop and client relations suffer.
To support your well-being, the Alberta Lawyers’ Assistance Society (Assist) is also available to provide free and confidential professional counselling, peer support, well-being education and awareness, as well as community programming to lawyers and members of their family. Assist is an independent charitable organization that does not disclose or share any personal information about people using their services with the Law Society or any other entity. The Law Society offers the following courses and resources to help you develop competencies required to have a safe and effective practice and supplement the CPD activities you undertake.
- Law Practice Essentials Course – Designed to assist lawyers in learning about key areas applicable to all lawyers in private practice.
- Key Resources – Includes individual resources on a variety of legal topics and in a variety of formats.
