- A Mentor Moment with Anthony G. Young, KC
“I enjoy connecting with interesting, dynamic and committed people who often give as much as they take.”
Anthony G. Young, KC has been involved in mentorship since 2016 and signed up as a mentor for the Mentor Connect program after he finished serving as President of the Law Society.
Why he became involved with Mentor Connect:
“’I was asked.’ It was an easy decision.
As a mentor, I have the opportunity to learn more about my profession and the people in it. There is exposure to the challenges that others face. In some cases, the challenges are similar to my own. On the other hand a mentor has the opportunity to discover different and unique problems that affect the changing face of our profession.
Mentoring is a unique opportunity to gain new perspectives and to pursue new ideas.”
A bit about his current mentoring relationship:
“I have found that it is often difficult for mentees to clearly articulate their personal and professional needs. They often do not know what they want or how to achieve it. Part of my role has been to tease out the underlying challenges and to provide some insight on how to navigate whatever may lay ahead.”
What he enjoys the most about being a mentor with the Mentor Connect program:
“I enjoy connecting with interesting, dynamic and committed people who often give as much as they take.”
What he hopes his mentee learns from working with him:
“Hopefully mentees working with me will be able to grow professionally and personally. I may be able to help them establish goals and make decisions to achieve those goals.
Perhaps they will be able to learn from all the mistakes I have made without making the same mistakes themselves.”
What he has learned from working with his mentee:
“Everyone has the power to succeed.”
If a lawyer is thinking about becoming a mentor, they should know…
“That not everyone is a superstar. Sometimes just helping someone to cope is a gift that will never be forgotten. Helping a colleague to succeed is its own reward.”
