- A Mentor Moment with Kathleen Wells
“Life can change in a minute and you have to be flexible in your life and career. Opportunities are everywhere.”
Kathleen Wells has been a mentor with the Law Society’s Mentor Connect program since 2017.
A bit about her current mentoring relationship:
“I have had some really fantastic lawyers reach out for mentoring, some in my practice area and some outside my practice area. I have worked with lawyers who are new to Canada and/or lawyers who like me, came to law as a second career.”
What she enjoys the most about being a mentor with the Mentor Connect program:
“I really enjoy meeting with lawyers who I never may have had the opportunity to meet. I think I learn as much or more each time I meet with a mentee. Also, it continues to show me why it is so important to share experiences with other lawyers.”
What she hopes her mentee(s) learn from working with her:
“Life can change in a minute and you have to be flexible in your life and career. Opportunities are everywhere. Also, never be afraid to ask for help. We have a great profession and make it better by sharing ideas and experiences.”
What she has learned from working with her mentee(s):
“To look at files and life from a different perspective and also how lucky we are to live in Alberta and Canada. Some of my mentees have gone through huge sacrifices to live and work here. It’s always humbling and yet joyful at the same time.”
If a lawyer is thinking about becoming a mentor, they should know…
“It’s really easy to do. You can be as flexible as you like. I typically see mentees at lunch hour so we can chat over a bite. Mentorship is really rewarding. It’s doubtful we will remember all the files we have had in our career, but it is likely the impact of mentoring will endure long after our careers have ended.”
The Law Society of Alberta offers Mentor Moments to acknowledge the contributions made by volunteer lawyers in their mentorship programs and to encourage other Alberta lawyers to consider participating.
